Dezhou City, located in Shandong Province, is one of the most important cotton-producing regions in China. However, last year’s rise in cotton prices did not significantly boost farmers' interest in planting cotton. This year, the total cotton area in Dezhou dropped to 1.55 million mu, marking a 32% decline compared to the previous year and reaching its lowest level in 11 years. In mid to early August, the region experienced a prolonged period of heavy rainfall and continuous overcast weather, which severely affected the cotton plants during their critical budding stage. Many bolls fell off prematurely, and the lower bolls began to rot, showing signs of black mold. As a result, cotton production is expected to drop by more than 20% this season. Currently, the cotton in Dezhou has started to open and mature, but farmers have only picked a small portion so far. Due to the persistent rain in August, the quality of the cotton has deteriorated, with many bolls turning dark and falling into grades 5 or 6, which are considered low quality. With the reduced planting area, combined with the impact of the weather-related disasters and rising food prices, farmers are now expecting higher prices for their cotton. Most believe that even if the price reaches 4 yuan per kilogram, it could go up to 5 yuan. As a result, many sellers are hesitant to sell immediately, adopting a wait-and-see attitude. This has caused a delay in the selling process, pushing it back by more than half a month. Farmers are now closely watching the market, hoping for better returns before deciding to sell.
