positive words: self talk

Hello, friends! I've missed you all quite a bit over the last few weeks while I've been deeply focused on creating the fall collection. It's been a whirlwind of activity, and unfortunately, I haven't had much time to connect with everyone as often as I'd like. S has been staying with the grandparents all month, and it's been surprisingly liberating to have such extended periods of uninterrupted time to work. Todd and I are definitely missing her a lot, but we've also cherished this rare opportunity to reconnect with each other. Still, I'm counting down the days until I can pick her up and reunite with my family later this week. In the meantime, I just returned from an absolutely delightful trip to Nashville where I taught my fit workshop at Anna Maria Horner's Craft South. It was such an inspiring weekend! As always, I adore teaching this class because it gives me the chance to meet so many incredible women. We laughed, cried, shared stories, and enjoyed delicious meals together. There was ample time to sew, experiment with new techniques, and explore the many ways we can tweak patterns to achieve the perfect fit. Every time I teach, I walk away learning something new—and it’s truly humbling to see how far some of you are willing to travel just to participate in these workshops! Here's a sneak peek from Anna Maria and Craft South: [Insert Image] Since I’ve been preoccupied with women’s wear and customizing garments to fit perfectly, I thought it would be interesting to dive into the topic of our bodies today. We all have aspects of our bodies we're not entirely satisfied with, right? It's so easy to get caught up in self-criticism, especially when shopping for clothes that never seem to fit quite right. Sewing for myself has been such a game-changer for me because it allows me to tailor clothes specifically to my body. That’s also why I’m passionate about teaching fitting—it’s not as complicated as it sounds once you grasp the basics. Learning to sew clothes that fit well can shift your mindset, helping you appreciate your unique body instead of feeling like something is inherently wrong with it. Mass-produced clothing simply can't cater to the diversity of human shapes and sizes. Something I've been reflecting on lately is the inner dialogue we have with ourselves about our bodies. Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “I hate my ___”? If you do, it might be worth paying closer attention to those thoughts. A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a video featuring plus-sized model Robyn Lawley responding to negative comments about her appearance with an incredibly positive attitude. Her response was enlightening, and it made me realize how powerful it can be to approach our insecurities with kindness. (The inspiring part begins around 40 seconds in.) [Insert Video Link] After watching that video, I began paying more attention to my own internal monologue regarding my body. Simply being mindful of what I say to myself seems to be shifting how I view myself already. Shortly afterward, I came across an article that got me thinking—what if I changed my computer password to something affirming about my body? Could altering the words I type daily influence my perception of myself? It’s essential to remember that appreciating our bodies doesn’t mean we can’t strive for improvement. When we genuinely love and accept our bodies, we can use that positivity to motivate ourselves to make meaningful changes. For instance, Todd and I recently started doing the Seven Minute Workout every morning. It’s astonishing how effective such a short routine can be! While the initial days left us both sore (to put it mildly), we’re already noticing improvements in our strength and energy levels. This small commitment has made me consider changing my password to something that reinforces my motivation to continue these workouts throughout the year. So here’s the question: Can we embrace our bodies while still striving for growth? And what kinds of messages do you send to yourself about your body? Let me know your thoughts—I’d love to hear from you!
