Cotton yarns and fabrics still constitute important Indian export products

India is the world’s second largest exporter of cotton textiles. Although the proportion of cotton yarns and fabrics in India’s total export volume has declined in recent years, cotton yarns and fabrics are still important Indian export products. In 1950-51, the export of cotton yarns and fabrics accounted for 23% of the total national exports, 10.12% in 1960-61, and 7.8% in 1998-99.

From 1960 to 1961, the total export value of these products was Rs 65 crore, which was raised to Rs 408 crore by 1980-81 and increased to Rs 14,474 crore in 2004-05. In the total value of textile exports, the proportion of fabrics produced by textile mills is 26%, the proportion of apparel is 46%, the proportion of cloth produced by manual loom is 12%, the proportion of power looms produced is 3%, and that of cotton knitwear The proportion is 3%.

The main import countries of Indian cotton fabrics are Russia, the United States, Britain, the United States, Sudan, Nepal, Australia, France, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Singapore. With the signing of an agreement with the European Community (EEC), Indian cotton manufacturers have acquired a special status. In addition to providing marketing and research facilities, the Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council also helps to promote the export of cotton fabrics. Indian exports are facing fierce competition from cheap textiles from Pakistan, Japan and China.
