Child's character to be defensive, mother's responsibility to choose shoes

On March 18, during a hearing on children's footwear, it became clear that this issue is far more complex than it appears. A reporter visited the outpatient department of the City Women and Children’s Health Care Center and Heyuan Affiliated Hospital, interviewing 20 parents about how they usually choose children's shoes. Out of these, 16 admitted they had never paid attention to the production standards for children's shoes or even knew there was a national standard in place. Most focused only on the quality and price of the shoes, while just four parents were concerned with shoe development and its impact on children's foot health. According to a survey by the Chinese Medical Association, over 60% of 1,000 children examined had some form of foot problem. Nearly 70% suffered from flat feet, 30% had foot valgus, and 70% of parents lacked sufficient knowledge about flatfoot. Experts say that these issues are often due to genetic factors, body weight, and improper footwear. The lack of standardized regulations for children's shoes, combined with the rarity of finding properly fitting shoes, is a major cause. Dr. Xiong Mingyue from the Department of Orthopedics at the First Affiliated Hospital of Heike emphasized that choosing the right shoes for children is not a simple task. Properly selected shoes can make walking easier and reduce the risk of various foot-related problems, such as blisters, numbness, inflammation, and toe deformities. Many parents opt for air-cushioned shoes to make their kids more comfortable, but not all children benefit from them. For young preschoolers, improper use of such shoes may lead to unexpected injuries. Air-cushioned soles, made from special materials, provide elasticity and reduce shock during movement. However, the height of the cushion plays a significant role in foot health. High-soled shoes can lead to issues like hallux valgus and flat feet. Since children love running and jumping, shoes need to be flexible enough to support their movements. Soles that are too thick or too soft may cause fatigue and affect knee and spine health. It is recommended that children wear shoes with a sole thickness of no more than 1 cm and a heel height of 1.5 cm. Shoes that are too thin or thick should be avoided. Cushion shoes are better suited for children over 16 or once their bones have fully matured. The material of the shoes also matters a lot. Cloth shoes are lightweight, soft, and breathable, making them comfortable for children. Leather shoes, on the other hand, can be too rigid and may cause skin bruising, especially for younger children. When buying shoes, parents should focus on the sole height, upper material, and flexibility. If the shoes are too hard or difficult to bend, children may struggle to walk comfortably. It's advisable to let the child squat while trying on the shoes to check for flexibility. Also, pay attention to the weight of the shoes — overly heavy shoes can be uncomfortable. The inner joints should fit well, and it's best to walk around in them to ensure comfort. Make sure there's enough space in the toe box to accommodate slightly stretched feet. Avoid shoes with heels, as they can shift the child’s center of gravity and lead to poor posture, including knee and hip problems and a curved back. Flat shoes are better for supporting the arches and preventing muscle and ligament strain. Slippers should also be avoided, as they are not safe and can lead to "character feet."
