The role of petrochemical industry

Petrochemicals play a vital role in modern society, serving as the backbone of energy supply and industrial development. As a primary source of energy, petrochemical products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel, heavy oil, and natural gas are essential for powering transportation, industry, and daily life. In 1995, China produced 80 million tons of fuel oil, and today, oil and natural gas account for about 60% of global energy consumption. In contrast, China's reliance on coal is less than 20%, despite its large-scale use. These energy resources are primarily used for transportation—cars, planes, ships, and machinery—along with some domestic applications. Energy efficiency remains a key concern, as petrochemicals consume around 8.5% of total energy, and continuous efforts are needed to reduce this consumption. Beyond energy, petrochemicals are a cornerstone of the materials industry. Alongside metals and inorganic materials, synthetic polymers are one of the three major material categories. Globally, petrochemicals produce approximately 145 million tons of synthetic materials annually, with China alone producing over 8 million tons by 1996. Additionally, petrochemicals provide the majority of organic chemical raw materials that drive the chemical industry, making them indispensable across various sectors. The petrochemical industry also significantly supports agricultural development. Nitrogen fertilizers, which make up 80% of all chemical fertilizers, are largely derived from petrochemical sources. The use of agricultural plastic films, pesticides, and fuels for farming equipment further strengthens the industry’s contribution to agriculture. In addition, nearly every industrial sector depends on petrochemical products. Modern transportation, metal processing, and machinery rely heavily on lubricants and other petrochemical-based materials. Globally, about 20 million tons of lubricants are produced annually, with China accounting for roughly 1.8 million tons. Petrochemicals also contribute to construction through materials like plastics, coatings, and flooring. The light and textile industries have long been traditional users, while emerging fields like electronics and high-tech manufacturing increasingly depend on advanced petrochemical products. Finally, the growth of the petrochemical industry is closely tied to support from various sectors. Large-scale production facilities require significant investment and strategic location planning to ensure efficient logistics, power supply, and infrastructure. Each stage of production—from refining to cracking and polymerization—demands specialized equipment, often requiring international procurement. This industry is highly technology-driven, relying on expertise in chemistry, engineering, automation, and more. To sustain progress, continued research and skilled workforce development are essential, ensuring that the petrochemical sector can evolve and meet future demands.
