Child's character to be defensive, mother's responsibility to choose shoes

On March 18, during a hearing on children's footwear, it became clear that this issue is far more complex than it appears. A reporter visited the outpatient department of the City Women and Children’s Health Care Center and Heyuan Affiliated Hospital, where they randomly interviewed 20 parents about how they typically choose shoes for their children. Out of these, 16 admitted they had never paid attention to the production standards of children's shoes or even knew that there was a national standard in place. Most focused only on the quality and price of the shoes, while only four parents considered the development of the child's feet and overall health. According to a survey conducted by the Chinese Medical Association, over 60% of the 1,000 children surveyed had foot-related issues, with nearly 70% suffering from flat feet, 30% experiencing foot valgus, and 70% of parents lacking sufficient knowledge about flatfoot. Experts suggest that many of these foot problems stem from genetic factors, body fat, and improper footwear. The lack of standardized regulations for children's shoes, along with the rarity of properly fitting shoes, plays a major role. Dr. Xiong Mingyue from the Department of Orthopedics at Heike First Affiliated Hospital emphasized that choosing the right shoes is not a trivial matter. Proper footwear can make walking easier and more comfortable for children, especially those just learning to walk. Incorrect choices can lead to blisters, toe numbness, inflammation, and even deformities in the toes. Many parents opt for air-cushioned shoes to make their kids more comfortable, but not all children benefit from them. For young preschoolers, such shoes may cause unexpected injuries. Air-cushioned soles are designed to reduce impact and provide elasticity, but the height of the cushion can affect foot health. High soles, for example, can contribute to conditions like hallux valgus and flat feet. Since children tend to run and jump, their shoes need to be flexible enough to allow natural movement. Soles that are too thick or soft can cause fatigue and negatively impact knee and spine health. It is recommended that children wear shoes with a sole thickness of no more than 1 cm and a heel height of 1.5 cm. After the age of 16 or when bone development is complete, cushioned shoes may be considered. The material of the shoes also matters. Breathable cloth shoes are lightweight and comfortable, while leather shoes may be too stiff and unsuitable for younger children. Choosing the right shoes can be stressful for parents, as there are so many options available. Dr. Xiong advises selecting shoes with a proper sole height, a soft and flexible upper, and a bendable sole. When trying on shoes, it's important to have the child squat to check flexibility. The weight of the shoe should not be too heavy, and the inner joints should fit well. It’s best to walk around in them and shift weight between both feet to ensure there is enough space in the toe box. Avoiding high-heeled shoes is crucial, as they can cause posture issues like knee and hip misalignment and a curved back. Flat shoes are better for protecting the arches and preventing muscle and ligament strain. Slippers are not safe for children and can lead to "character feet." Additional tips include: - Repurpose old shoes by adding spikes. - Don’t throw away old shoes; instead, let them "breathe" by keeping them open. - Add a physical insurance policy to your shoes. - Clean matte shoes properly. - Use breathable, antibacterial socks to prevent bad odors. - Understand the hidden functions of sports shoe tails. - Learn how to reduce the noise of high heels. - Choose appropriate shoes during pregnancy. - What to do if shoes get moldy. - Avoid certain shoes in the summer that could harm your feet.
