The role of petrochemical industry

Petrochemicals play a vital role in modern society, serving as the backbone of energy supply and industrial development. First and foremost, petrochemicals are the primary source of energy. This includes gasoline, kerosene, diesel, heavy oil, and natural gas, which account for a significant portion of global energy consumption. In 1995, China produced 80 million tons of fuel oil, and today, oil and natural gas make up around 60% of the world's total energy use. In China, coal remains a major energy source, but its share is gradually decreasing. The energy from petrochemicals is primarily used to power vehicles, aircraft, ships, and industrial equipment, with only a small fraction used for household purposes. Given the importance of energy in economic growth, reducing overall energy consumption while maintaining efficiency remains a key challenge. Secondly, petrochemicals are a cornerstone of the materials industry. Alongside metals and inorganic materials, synthetic polymers form the three main categories of materials. Globally, petrochemicals contribute approximately 145 million tons of synthetic materials annually, with China producing over 8 million tons by 1996. Additionally, petrochemicals provide most of the organic chemical raw materials that drive the chemical industry, making them essential across various sectors. Thirdly, the petrochemical industry significantly supports agricultural development. Nitrogen fertilizers, which account for about 80% of all chemical fertilizers, are largely derived from petrochemical sources. The use of plastic films, pesticides, and fuels for agricultural machinery further highlights the industry’s critical role in modern farming. Fourthly, nearly every industrial sector relies on petrochemical products. From transportation to construction, manufacturing to electronics, petrochemicals are deeply embedded in daily operations. For example, lubricants, plastics, and coatings are widely used in building materials and consumer goods. As high-tech industries grow, the demand for specialized petrochemical products continues to rise, driving innovation and expansion in the sector. Finally, the development of the petrochemical industry depends on support from multiple fields. Large-scale petrochemical zones require extensive infrastructure, including refineries, cracking units, and production facilities. These projects demand significant investment, strategic location planning, and advanced engineering solutions. The industry also relies heavily on metallurgy, machinery, and technology research, emphasizing the need for continuous scientific and technical advancement. To sustain growth, it is crucial to invest in education, research, and international collaboration, ensuring the petrochemical sector remains at the forefront of global industrial progress.
